City Phrases II: Adaptation & In No Sense
In which my adopted hometown plays itself:
"To name a sensibility, to draw its contours and to recount its history, requires a deep sympathy modified by revulsion. Though I am speaking about sensibility only - and about a sensibility that, among other things, converts the serious into the frivolous - these are grave matters."
- Susan Sontag, "Notes on Camp" (1964)

2 Comments:
"Los Angeles is a glittering dream world of "stained-glass Marilyn Monroes shining in the trees, leopard-spotted cars, gardens full of pink poison oleander," where the pollution makes for extra-beautiful sunsets. It is also the home of Weetzie Bat." - from the always pompous NYTimes' article on Francesca Lia Block (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/23/books/23bloc.html).
It's a sweet summation of Los Angeles c/o its most fantastical resident. You probably don't have too much use for YA lit, but Block genre bends with the best of 'em.
